PURGATORY[]

Status: Unconfirmed Realm / Restricted Access

Overview[]

Purgatory is the name given to a corrupted, non-standard environment reported by the player ZAY during his first encounter with the ghost known as ZERO. It is not a recognized map in the game’s official files and has never been replicated by any other known player.

Purgatory is thought to exist as a hidden state, or a corrupted version of Gorilla Tag’s core maps, accessible only through unknown means—possibly by modifying unlisted or unstable game files.

Environment[]

Upon spawning in Purgatory, ZAY found himself in a completely textureless version of Stump, where all materials were replaced with flat monochrome surfaces—mostly whites and greys, with black shadows and edges. The lighting was ambient and unnatural, with no visible skybox or shadows cast by objects.

Known Features[]

  • Stump All expected geometry was present, but stripped of texture. The central tree trunk was hollow and grey, and all environmental audio was absent.
  • Sealed Entrances Entrances to other maps (City, Canyons, Caves) were physically blocked by floating geometry. These obstructions included misplaced objects like benches, lamps, and sections of walls—hovering and rotating slightly, out of sync with gravity or logic.
  • Forced Exit to Forest The only navigable exit was through the opening to Forest, which led to a distorted, textureless version of the map.

Forest Variant[]

The Forest section of Purgatory bore no resemblance to its real-world counterpart, aside from the layout of trees and paths:

  • Skybox: Replaced with a solid, uniform white—giving a surreal "limbo" effect with no sense of time or depth.
  • Floating Assets: Debris and environmental pieces from other maps (e.g., clouds, torches, signs) hovered randomly in the air, some rotating, others glitching between positions.
  • No Collisions: Some objects were pass-through, while others behaved like solid walls despite being visual-only props.

The Mirror[]

At the center of the Forest in Purgatory was a single, out-of-place mirror—nearly identical to the mirror in the City map.

Its placement was unnatural: tilted slightly off the ground, with no frame or supports. It functioned like a real mirror, showing the player’s movements—but it was through this mirror that ZERO first appeared.

ZAY’s actions during this time were simple: waving, jumping, and moving erratically. The reflection of ZERO—unseen anywhere else—began slowly mimicking these actions.

Moments later, the mimicry grew disturbingly accurate, and then predictive. Without warning, the game disconnected and crashed with no message.

Entry Conditions[]

The only known access to Purgatory occurred after ZAY discovered and altered a nameless file buried in the game directory. The file did not match any standard format or naming convention. Its contents have not been made public.

Despite attempts to replicate his process, no other players have successfully entered the realm again.
